How product classification enters a database

Reference sources associate an allocated range with product metadata such as credit, debit, prepaid or commercial. Lookup providers normalize those descriptions into a smaller set of fields that users can search.

The result is useful for portfolio analysis, support and routing context. It is not a real-time read of the account behind a card number.

Why six and eight digits can disagree

A broad six-digit allocation can contain many eight-digit sub-ranges. One child may support debit products while another is assigned to prepaid or commercial cards.

A six-digit lookup can therefore return the parent portfolio’s dominant label while a more precise source returns the child programme. Both answers must be interpreted at the precision they declare.

Labels are not universal business rules

Networks, issuers and data vendors may use different taxonomies. A reloadable prepaid programme, a debit product and a hybrid fintech account can be mapped differently depending on the purpose of the source.

Before building a pricing or acceptance rule, document which labels your provider returns, how often they refresh and what happens when the field is missing or uncertain.

Use range type as context

A merchant can use product type to improve reporting or route a case for review, but authorization, funding and transaction eligibility come from payment systems handling the live operation.

Customer-facing language should remain careful: “range classified as debit” is supportable; “this specific card is funded and active” is not.

BIN type is a property of the matched range. It is not a live statement about the money, status or owner of an individual card.
